Introducing New Garden Favourites for Spring!

This spring, we at Florissa are excited to introduce some exciting new additions to our lineup! Whether you’re a cut flower gardener, a vegetable gardener, or you do it all, you are sure to find something to add to your garden this spring. We have amazing new flowers, and delicious fruits and vegetables to try too. Check out our new items to plant this year alongside your tried-and-true favourites! Below are just some of the many different new Florissa varieties for this year.

Colourful Companion Dolce Amore

This year Florissa’s Choice of the Year is a stunning duo of decorative dahlias, Dolce Amore. With 4″ blooms, these dahlias are perfect for cut flower arrangements. You will delight in snipping off the perfectly shaped pink and red blooms, as more will appear on these reblooming dahlias! As one of Florissa’s select Colourful Companions, we have specifically chosen to pair these two dahlias with their compatibility in height, colour, bloom size, and blooming time. Growing to a height of 100 cm (40”) this duo of dahlias will be a popular one this season! Choose a full-sun location for these beauties and be ready to enjoy their blooms from July through October! Lily Rising Moon

Lilies are a striking addition to a summer garden. New this year is a spectacular garden giant, Lily Rising Moon! With an incredible height of 120 cm (48”), these blooms are perfect for cut flowers. The huge sunny yellow petals are edged in deep rose, adding a focal point to the garden. As an OT lily (a cross between Oriental and Trumpet lilies), Rising Moon is very fragrant and blooms mid to late summer. Every year it will produce blooms on a very tall and strong stem. Being so tall, OT lilies are often called lily trees! Rising Moon is great for planting in large containers and mixed borders in your full-to-part sun areas. Peony Miss America

Add some intoxicatingly beautiful fragrance to your garden with Peony Miss America. Its semi-double white flowers open from soft pink buds into large, cup-shaped blossoms. The centre of the blossoms are packed with bright yellow stamens. Its foliage is attractive, with lush, bushy dark green glossy leaves. This variety grows to 70 cm (28”) and will grace your garden with blooms from March until May. The 6” blooms open late spring to early summer and are a pollinator’s dream! You will be able to welcome beautiful bumblebees, hummingbirds and butterflies to the garden. A marvellous bonus to peonies is they are deer-resistant! No need to worry about your amazing garden peony being eaten. Peonies are perennials, meaning you will be enjoying Miss America in your garden for decades to come! Year after year, Miss America will be appearing in all her glory, brightening up your garden with her showy blooms. Perfect for a zone 2-9 garden. Hemerocallis Lavender Blue Baby

Oh baby baby! Add amazing colour to your garden this summer with Hemerocallis Lavender Blue Baby. Are you a fan of beautiful, unique flowers that are easy to care for? If so, you need to check out this new hemerocallis. This gorgeous flower is easy to grow and maintain, making it a perfect addition to your garden. Hemerocallis Lavender Blue Baby is a reblooming daylily that grows to 60 cm (24”) tall. This beautiful perennial boasts large, 6” lavender-blue blooms that have a yellow-green throat. Its petals have a delicate ruffle, adding to its charming appearance. Choose a full to part sun area of your garden to plant this perennial Hemerocallis and you will be enjoying blooms from June until September!  This perfect patio companion has elegant grass-like foliage making it a perfect variety to tuck into containers or mixed borders. Zone 3-9.

Potato Huckleberry Gold

Potatoes are one of the most versatile vegetables around! It can be baked, fried, and mashed – not to mention the numerous recipes uses, from perogies to gnocchi! If you love the popular Yukon Gold, then you’ll love Huckleberry Gold. With purple skin and golden yellow flesh, Huckleberry has a similar flavour and texture to Yukon Gold. This gourmet potato boasts a high yield and an early-season harvest. As an extra bonus, Huckleberry Gold is low on the GI scale. This means, that compared to other potatoes, it has a lower glycemic index rating. So, for those watching their carbs and sugar intake, choosing a lower GI indexed potato is a beneficial health option! Scallions-Spring Onions

This year, we are adding a kitchen favourite to the Florissa family! Growing your own vegetables is always a rewarding experience, and having fresh scallions on hand for your culinary creations is no exception! Scallions, also known as green onions or spring onions, are a delicious and versatile vegetable that can be enjoyed in various dishes, both cooked and raw. These onions are so easy to grow and the perfect addition to mixed herb containers or your summer garden! They grow so quickly that you can start to harvest the green tops a few weeks after planting. What can you do with your freshly harvested scallions? The possibilities are endless! You can slice them thinly and use them as a garnish, integrated into your favourite stir-fry and salads, and they are a great addition to dips, salsa, and guacamole. They have a mild, sweet flavour that complements almost any savoury dish.

      Hi Leslie, thank you for reaching out to us. Yes, you can grow onions in shallow containers. Plant them when all chance of frost has passed and keep the soil moist through the heat of summer.
