It’s time to indulge – oh yes, the holidays are upon us and waxed amaryllis are available at your favorite local garden center.

This is indulgence of the best kind, because an Amaryllis is elegant enough standing all its own, but one just isn’t enough, is it? You can have all the fun of decorating with them, and none of the fuss. There is no need to pot them up, and no need to water.

It’s only 4-6 weeks to blooms and each bulb produces 2-3 flowering stems with 4-5 stunning fiery red trumpet shaped flowers.

Pick up two or three bulbs for arranging in a glass cylindrical vase with moss, pinecones, and red berries. You can try staggering the bulbs by keeping them in a fridge (at 3-4°C) where they’re more than happy to hang out and do nothing. Pull one out to start the show, then the following week pull out another, and then the following week yet another. They’ll make a great table centerpiece.

Speaking of centerpieces create a wreath around a single bulb. The metal coil stand secured in the wax helps them stand upright, and easily fastens into foam.

Let the kids decorate them and wrap single bulbs in burlap and strands of garland, beads, or bakers twine. Cut out foil stars, snowflakes and angel’s wings. You can soften the wax with a blow dryer and set the wings in place with straight pins. Turn it into a science project and measure how much your amaryllis grows each day. You might inspire a future gardener.
